The BSc (Honours) Quantity Surveying programme aims to provide fundamental knowledge and develop an advanced understanding of the theory and practice of construction technology, law, procurement, construction contracts, measurement, construction management, financial management , business management, information technology and project management in the wider business and built environment sectors. The programme will provide opportunities for the critical appreciation and understanding of the significant factors constraining the effective management and development of the built environment, e.g. physical, legal, economic, sustainable and technological factors.
There will be opportunities for collaborative and individual student-centred study on project tasks that simulate real-world working practices, in order to develop analytical, critical and problem solving skills such that they can define, investigate and analyse problems, form judgements, make decisions and demonstrate the acquisition of such qualities.
The program aims to provide a well-balanced education which will allow you to develop your full academic potential at first degree level and in doing so to facilitate the development of independent logical thought, and judgement. In addition, this program will offer a basis for general professional experience and to encourage a consciousness of the professional, business and commercial environment, to prepare you for the transition from Higher Education to employment within a professional context.
What is Quantity Surveying?
Quantity Surveyors are the cost managers of the consturction industry. They find employment in contracting, consultancy or project owner organisations. Currently, Quantity Surveying is one of the most sought-after Degree programmes in Sri Lanka due to the immense demand for Quantity surveyors in the construction industry both in Sri Lanka and abroad. It is also considered as one of the most lucrative professions with career opportunities abroad, especially in the Middle Eastern region.
The degree will be awarded by the Liverpool John Moores University - UK (LJMU). The program will cover subject areas ranging from measurement, estimating and costing, contract law, contract administration, project management and quantity surveying practice. By collaborating with LJMU, SLIIT will be bringing in a global flavour and international standards to the study sphere of quantity surveying together with practical exposure throughout the program. The quantity surveying program being nested within the Faculty of Engineering of SLIIT, offer students a unique chance to collaborate with other professionals involved in the construction field as Engineers and Architects, for an overall understanding of the building process and project experience.
The teaching staff consists of experienced academic and professional Quantity Surveyors, Engineers, and other subject specialists of the highest caliber. With a recognised degree in Quantity Surveying, there will be many other professional avenues that will open up for the student. This degree will allow entry to Masters program in areas such as Contracts and Negotiation, Procurement Advising and Consultation, Arbitration, Cost Controlling, Cost Planning and Project Management.
