BSc (Hons) Cyber Security

Requirements:

The minimum qualifications required for admission on the standard route are:


A. GCE Advanced Level


  1. Sri Lankan: 3 passes or
  2. London, Cambridge or Edexcel: 3 D passes or
  3. Any combination totalling to 12 points from the following tariff scheme:



Or


Asia Pacific Institute of Information Technology Degree Foundation


And


B. GCE/GCSE Ordinary Level – Credit Passes (Grade 4) for English and Mathematics


Or


C. Equivalent qualifications


 The minimum qualifications required for admission on the accelerated route are:


– GCE Advanced Level (Sri Lankan, London, Cambridge or Edexcel) – 3 C passes and

– GCE/GCSE Ordinary Level – Credit Passes (Grade 4) for English and Mathematics


You may apply pending A/L results. Applicants with additional qualifications may receive advanced entry.



Description:

Our BSc (Hons) Cyber Security award is designed to launch your future career in the protection of software and hardware against malicious threats. Our course is designed to give you not only a theoretical foundation in computer science, but also a practical and expert-level knowledge in a specialist area of the field which can range from network security through to ethical hacking. You will be fully prepared to work in the industry upon graduation.


We focus heavily on the practical element of cyber security. A laboratory equipped with the latest devices and software will enable you to put into practice what you learn in class, throughout your course of study.


On successful completion of the BSc (Hons) Cyber Security, students will be awarded with a Staffordshire University degree


Teaching & Learning


You will learn through lectures, tutorials and workshops. Lectures are highly interactive and incorporate group discussions, video presentations, and activity-based learning. Learning activities are designed to develop soft skills as well as your ability to work independently and as part of a group. Your learning experience will be enriched by field visits and guest lectures by industry experts.

Networking Concepts and Cyber Security


  • Design and development of commercial network infrastructure (CCNA: Routing and Switching)
  • Introduction to basic cyber security principles


Web Development and Operating Systems


  • Basic website design & development using java script & HTML
  • Introduction to Linux operating system & bash scripting


Year 2


Commercial Computing


  • Professional & study skills & research methods
  • Introduction to project management using agile methods


Cyber Operations and Network Security


  • Cyber Operations and Network Security Provision of cyber security operations (CCNA Cyber Ops)
  • Implementation of cyber security using CISCO ASA (CCNA Security)


Ethical Hacking


  • Penetration testing and the five phases of hacking (CEH)
  • Tools and counter measures for active network defense


Cyber Security


  • Cyber-risk analysis and development of comprehensive security practices
  • Risk management, disaster recovery and business continuity planning


Year 3


Industry Placement up to 1 Year


At the end of the second year you may opt for an internship/ placement to gain industry exposure


Year 4


Final Year Project


  • Design and modeling of a solution for a real-world problem
  • Development and evaluation of a solution for a real-world problem


IT Infrastructure Security


  • Design and development of secure enterprise infrastructure
  • Deployment of hardened Linux based systems


Advanced Topics in Cyber Security


  • Introduction to contemporary and cutting-edge topics in cyber security
  • Evaluation and usage of cutting-edge security technologies


Operating Systems Internals and Biometrics


  • Overview of internal functionalities and security of an operating system
  • Evaluation and usage of cutting-edge biometric technologies


Career Opportunities


You will be able to commence your career as a Information Security Analyst, Ethical Hacker, Computer Forensics Analyst, Chief Information Security Officer, Penetration Tester and progress onto job roles as an IT Security Consultant, Information Security Engineer and Systems Security Administrator.
